Hope Air named a Website of the Month

Hope Air is a not-for-profit that works to provide those in financial need with free travel to medical care far from home. In Canada, healthcare coverage starts at the door of the doctor’s office. How you get to the doctor and any related travel costs fall to you. Hope Air is the only national charity providing free flights to low-income families who must travel to specialist medical care that does not exist in their communities. Hope Air believes that where you live in Canada and how much money you make should not determine your ability to access our healthcare system. A free flight lets families focus on what is truly important – their health.

Goals of the new Hope Air website included creating a website that was visually and structurally appealing to Hope Air’s audience, which would serve as a major component of their overall communication strategy. It was important to create a compelling first impression to visitors by showcasing a fresh, modern look to engage stakeholders while connecting the right user to the right content to drive them to take action.  Clearly conveying the impact that Hope Air has on people’s lives in an authentic and compelling manner was a priority.

“Hope Air is very pleased with the outcome of our new website. A.K.A. was able to incorporate the unique features we required with novel solutions."

CEO

We recently launched a new website for our client Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC). CFCC helps build health, belonging and social justice in low-income communities across Canada through the power of food.

CFCC needed a new website would help achieve their vision of Canada where food is treated as a basic right and central to health, and where everyone has the means, knowledge and voice necessary to access good food with dignity. As CFCC believes that collaboration leads to bigger impact, a primary goal was to transform the CFCC website into an active online communication vehicle that would work as a central knowledge exchange hub for the broader food security sector, all while empowering CFCC staff to manage their online presence efficiently and effectively through best-in-class tools.

The new website has been a success and Kentico has named it one of June’s Top 10 Websites of the Month!

CFCC.png
It has been a pleasure working with the amazing CFCC team and A.K.A. looks foward to maintaining a long term relationship with the innovative organization. CFCC's Director of Communication, Christina Palassio shared this about working with A.K.A.:

"Working with A.K.A. has been terrific. The team brought their thoughtfulness and expertise to our project, listened to our needs and challenges, and worked with us to figure out how to meet them. Trying to satisfy the needs of multiple stakeholders can be a daunting task and having the team at A.K.A. on our side was a huge help. We knew that whatever came up, they'd help us figure it out. We've never looked as good on the web as we do today.”

Through Jack TalksJack Chapters, and Jack Summits, young leaders identify and dismantle barriers to positive mental health in their communities. Jack.org is working towards a Canada where all young people understand how to take care of their own mental health and look out for each other. Jack.org needed a new website that would support their mission of creating a Canada without shame, where all those who need support get the help they deserve. 2018 at A.K.A. New Media

2018 was great for A.K.A. New Media! Our team grew with amazing additions to our talented team, we helped our clients grow and further their causes, and we invested time and effort into our culture and to making a positive impact on our community and world.  We had the honour to refresh communications for existing clients, created new impactful online brands for new clients and had fun doing it!

Here’s a look at some of the stuff we got up to in 2018:

A.K.A. has had the honour of working with the Oakville Hospital Foundation for over ten years. In January, the newly launched Oakville Hospital Foundation website was named a Website of the Month by Kentico. A.K.A. also had the privilege to work with its longest standing client (close to 20 years), The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, in developing their latest Online Annual Report. Early in the year, AKA raisin rolled out the new and improved Peer-to-Peer and Ticketing modules, enabling hundreds of clients to build custom P2P Fundraising Campaigns and Special Events.

A.K.A. designed and developed a user-centric new online brand presence for both the Baycrest Centre and the Baycrest Foundation in celebration of their centennial year. In February, both sites were named a Site of the Month by Kentico.

In April, the AKA raisin team visited New Orleans for the 55th Annual AFP International Fundraising Conference and networked with clients and other not-for-profit organizations from across North America.  Later that month, the new logo, brand presence and website for Hope Air was launched and it was named a Website of the Month by Kentico.  Hope Air is the only national charity providing free flights to low-income Canadians who must travel to specialist medical care that doesn’t exist in their communities.

In June, we helped Community Food Centres Canada launch a new online presence to better support their vision of a Canada where food is treated as a basic right and central to health. The website was named a Site of the Month by Kentico. Some fun, engaging, successful social media campaigns soon followed.

In July, we launched the dynamic new website for Jack.org, which has gotten rave reviews and is a strong contender for Kentico’s 2018 Site of the Year! A.K.A. is so honoured to be working with Jack.org as Canada’s only charity training and empowering young leaders to revolutionize mental health.

In October, some of the AKA raisin team made the trip to Philadelphia to attend the DonorPerfect Community Network Conference to connect with partners, clients and prospective clients. In addition to continually welcoming and onboarding new clients, the raisin was busy rolling out a slew of incredible new features, functionality and integrations with many more coming in 2019. Stay up to date with all things raisin on their website.

In November, some of our AKA Broker team exhibited at the AppliedNet Conference in Nashville, Tennessee where we mingled with the North American insurance community and gave a presentation about effective digital strategies. Later that month, some of our strategy and design team headed to Bethesda, Maryland, to meet our awesome new clients at Round House Theatre (currently in development).

December was busy! We celebrated our Holiday Staff Party by sharing an amazing seven course Italian dinner together while raising funds for charity. We launched the new website for Headwaters Health Care Foundation, which will help inspire, build and nurture relationships with donors – we’ve also started to work with Headwaters Health Care Centre to create for them a new user-centric website, building upon the recent work on the foundation website.  Last but certainly not least, we launched the amazing new website for USDM Life Sciences, a global compliance and technology firm based in Santa Barbara, California.

This is only a taste of all the fantastic work we did in 2018. A.K.A. is incredibly privileged to have a slew of exciting projects underway for long-time and new clients, so stay tuned for what we have on the horizon in 2019! As always, we're ready for new challenges and can’t wait to see what the new year brings.

Greetings from everyone at A.K.A. New Media, we wish you an amazing and successful 2019!

AODA & Website Accessibility

Ontario has a goal to become fully accessible for people with disabilities by 2025, so that those with disabilities have more opportunities to participate in everyday life.  You’re likely aware of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), but what you might not know is how the AODA applies to your website and other digital properties.

Under the AODA, all public sector, private and non-profit organizations are required to make their websites accessible.  By January 1st, 2021, all public websites and web content posted after 2012, must meet the WCAG Level AA.  The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is an internationally accepted standard for web accessibility developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

WCAG guidelines will make content accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including:

  • Blindness and low vision
  • Deafness and hearing loss
  • Learning disabilities
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Mobility impairments
  • Speech impairments
Following the WCAG guidelines will not only make your website and content more accessible to people with disabilities, it will also make it more usable by older individuals with changing abilities due to ageing and ultimately it will improve the overall experience for all users.  WCAG’s guidelines and success criteria are organized around the following principles, which lay the foundation necessary for anyone to access and use web content:
  1. Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
  2. Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable.
  3. Understandable: Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable.
  4. Robust: Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.
It’s important to know that AODA compliance is not optional.  Companies can face fines of up to $100,000 a day for non-compliance and directors and officers of a corporation with fiduciary responsibility are liable for a fine of up to $50,000 a day.

Though Level AA compliance is not required until 2021, as an interactive agency with particular thought leadership, A.K.A. has been developing websites to meet Level AA for several years.  Because of our commitment to the AODA and our client’s success, we have partnered with Siteimprove to offer our client’s a complimentary digital audit of their site to evaluate where they currently stand in advance of the upcoming deadline.  Siteimprove is a global leader in digital accessibility and website optimization solutions, helping over 7,500 organizations world-wide provide a more inclusive online experience.
